Tatcha, the Japanese cosmetics retailer, approached Cognition to conceptualize and produce an immersive activation at The Grove in Los Angeles, California.

We were tasked to create a tech-driven intro experience for guests to enjoy before entering a retail showroom to test a variety of Tatcha skincare products. Working with the Tatcha team, we landed on a 4D guided meditation that would transport users to the forests of Japan. We began by sourcing audio of a Buddhist monk leading a guided meditation, which we then layered with a series of 4D treatments – diffused essential oils, low-lying fog produced via dry ice, subtle wind effects, chimes, and nature sounds.

On the walls of the meditation space, we projection-mapped found footage of a hinoki forest to ground the experience visually. Through this multi-sensory experience, guests were fully immersed in the Tatcha brand and entered the retail showroom in the right headspace to further explore the brand and product lines.
